Vancouver is a city where the mountains start at the end of the street, and a car is what turns a city break into a British Columbia trip: Whistler up the Sea to Sky Highway, the ferry to Vancouver Island and Victoria, the Okanagan wineries, Squamish for hiking. Downtown itself is compact with good transit, expensive parking and a lot of one-way streets, so many visitors only rent for the days they go out. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices, with pick-up at YVR or downtown.

Renting a car in Vancouver: common questions
Should I pick up at Vancouver Airport or downtown?
YVR pick-up is easy and puts you on the highways south and east straight away, but if your first nights are downtown you will pay hotel parking for a car you barely use. A downtown pick-up on the day you head to Whistler or the island is often the better plan. The SkyTrain links the airport and the city in under half an hour.
Do I need winter tyres or a 4x4 for Whistler?
In the colder months the Sea to Sky Highway and most mountain routes are signed for winter-rated tyres, and rental companies handle this differently, so check what the conditions shown per car include before booking a Whistler trip. A front-wheel-drive car with proper winter tyres is fine for the highway; a 4x4 only matters for unploughed side roads.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Vancouver, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
You search from this page and see live cars and prices on our partner’s site. When you choose one, the booking completes on their secure checkout, where you confirm the details and receive your voucher. Show the voucher at the desk on pick-up.
