Vilnius has one of the largest baroque old towns in Europe, and it is a place to walk, not drive: narrow cobbles, one-way lanes and paid parking zones through the centre. The car is for getting out, to Trakai's island castle, the Kernave hill forts, the lakes and forests of Aukstaitija national park, or across the motorway to Kaunas and the coast. Roads outside the city are quiet and well kept. Our partner network compares local and international rental companies with live prices.

Renting a car in Vilnius: common questions
Where should I base myself if I have a car?
Stay in or near the old town for the city days and go car-free, then either collect the car when you leave or park it in one of the outer paid zones where spaces are easier. If your trip is mostly countryside, a base on the edge of town near the ring road saves you crossing the centre each morning.
What is driving like outside Vilnius?
Relaxed. The A1 and A2 motorways lead west and north, and country roads are two-lane with little traffic, though village routes can be gravel. Aukstaitija's lakes and Dzukija's forests are best from May to September. In winter days are short and snow is normal, so a smaller trip radius is sensible.
What licence do I need?
A full driving licence held for at least a year is the usual requirement, and each company sets its own minimum age and young-driver conditions. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. The exact conditions for every car are shown before you book.
Is there a deposit, and what about insurance?
Deposit and insurance terms differ between companies in Vilnius, so they are shown per car before you book. You will see what is included, what the excess is, and whether a deposit is held on your card at the desk.
Where does the booking actually happen?
