CDW is not insurance, and that distinction matters
A collision damage waiver is the rental company agreeing not to pursue you for the full value of damage to their vehicle, down to an agreed excess. It is a waiver of their claim against you, not a policy that pays out to you. That is why it comes with conditions and why breaking those conditions puts the whole waiver aside rather than reducing it.
The practical version: with a waiver in place, a dented wing costs you up to the excess. Without one, it costs you what the repair costs. And in the situations the waiver excludes, it costs you what the repair costs regardless of what you paid for the waiver.
Third-party liability, which covers damage you do to other people and their property, is a separate thing again and is usually included by law. Check which of the two you are being quoted for when someone at a desk offers you "insurance".
The exclusions that actually catch people
Driving on unpaved roads is the big one in Aruba, because the island has a national park full of them and a lot of visitors want to see it. Damage sustained off paved roads is commonly excluded outright.
Then the standard list, which is broadly the same worldwide: undercarriage, roof and tyres are frequently excluded from a basic waiver; so is damage while the driver was over the limit; so is damage caused by a driver not named on the agreement. Adding your partner as a second driver costs little and is worth doing before, not after, the moment you want to swap at a beach car park.
Water damage deserves its own mention on an island. Salt water, flooded roads and parking somewhere the sea reaches are not covered by a normal waiver, and the damage tends to be expensive.
How the deposit works
The company holds a refundable amount against the card at pick-up, typically as a pre-authorisation rather than a charge. It is released after the car comes back undamaged, and the timing of that release is decided by your bank rather than by the rental company. Several working days is normal and it can be longer across a weekend or a card cycle.
The amount varies by class: a small hatchback carries a much lower deposit than a seven-seat van, and the deposit for each car on GetCar is shown before you book rather than sprung on you at the desk.
Bring a real credit card in the main driver's name if you can. Debit cards are accepted by some companies and refused by others, and where a debit card is accepted the deposit is often taken as an actual charge rather than a hold, which means the money genuinely leaves your account until the release clears.
Credit card cover and travel policies
Many credit cards include rental vehicle cover and many travel insurance policies include an excess reimbursement component. Both can be excellent value and both come with paperwork requirements that are easy to fail: paying for the entire rental on that specific card, declining the desk waiver in writing, reporting within a fixed window, and producing the rental agreement and a damage report.
The failure mode is predictable. People rely on card cover, decline everything at the desk, then discover after an incident that the cover excluded the vehicle class, the country, or rentals over a certain length. Read the specific terms for your card before you decline anything, not after.
Whatever you rely on, the deposit still gets held at pick-up. Card cover reimburses you afterwards; it does not stop the pre-authorisation happening in the first place.
Before you drive away
Photograph the car. All four corners, both bumpers, the wheels, the roof, the windscreen and the interior, with the timestamp on. Do the same at return. This takes two minutes and is the single most effective thing you can do to protect a deposit, because it converts an argument about whether a scratch was already there into a matter of record.
Check that any existing damage is written on the condition report before you sign it, not just pointed at. Verbal acknowledgement from a busy agent is worth nothing three weeks later.
Note the fuel level and the fuel policy in the same photographs. Disputes about fuel are more common than disputes about damage and are just as avoidable.

See what is availableCommon questions
Is insurance included in Aruba car rentals?
It varies by company and by car. Some rates on GetCar include insurance or CDW and are badged accordingly; for the rest, coverage is arranged at the desk. Third-party liability is generally included, but a collision damage waiver for the vehicle itself usually is not unless the rate says so.
How much is the deposit for a rental car in Aruba?
It depends on the vehicle class, with vans and larger SUVs carrying substantially more than a small hatchback. The deposit for each specific car is shown on GetCar before you book.
Can I rent a car in Aruba with a debit card?
Some companies accept debit cards and some do not. Where one is accepted, the deposit is often taken as a real charge rather than a hold, so the money leaves your account until it is released. A credit card in the main driver's name is the smoother option.
Does my credit card insurance cover a rental in Aruba?
Often yes, but conditions apply that are easy to breach: paying the full rental on that card, declining the desk waiver, reporting damage within a set window, and the vehicle class and country being eligible. Check your card's specific terms before declining coverage at the desk.
